Toyota’s Hilux pick-up truck is now available with a mild hybrid diesel powertrain.
The new offering combines the model’s familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine with an electric motor-generator, a 48V lithium-ion hybrid battery, and a DC-DC converter, as well as a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Toyota says advantages of the mild hybrid system include delivering smoother, quieter, and more refined performance, without compromising the Hilux’s off-road ability, with no change to its wading depth or load-carrying capabilities compared with pure diesel versions.
Electrical assistance is said to reduce the load on the engine, while energy is recovered by regenerative braking for redeployment.
In addition, the mild hybrid is the first Hilux to feature a new Multi-Terrain Select system, allowing the driver to choose from Sand, Mud, Rock, Dirt, Deep Snow, and Auto modes depending on conditions, with adjustments being made to the powertrain, suspension, and braking systems.
Despite the hybrid element, Toyota is not focusing on any fuel economy benefits with the new powertrain, and official CO2 emissions of 265g/km are among the highest in the Hilux range.
The new powertrain is available only with the double cab bodystyle and Invincible X trim level, with which it is priced at £41,431, excluding VAT.
