Kia has agreed a deal with electronics giant Samsung to integrate ‘internet of things’ connectivity with its PBV electric LCV range.

The integration of Samsung’s SmartThings Pro platform into vehicles will allow the wireless control of connected devices and technologies through a ‘plug and play’ service.

Kia says businesses will be able to configure routines based on sat-nav programming. For example, it says that when a baker is travelling to buy ingredients, an on-board refrigeration system can be automatically adjusted, ready to preserve them during transit. Then, when making the return trip, the baker could remotely turn on equipment at their business ready for their arrival.

Alongside the SmartThings Pro integration, Kia and Samsung also plan to develop specialised IoT solutions for customers in different industries.

Kia PBV division head Sangdae Kim said: “Kia PBVs are designed to be more than just vehicles, they are intelligent business solutions that connect seamlessly with digital ecosystems.

“We anticipate that our business collaboration with Samsung, leveraging its AI B2B solution SmartThings Pro, will extend the vehicle user experience for our business customers beyond PBVs into the broader IoT ecosystem.

“This partnership is expected to create new opportunities for discovering customer value.”

Samsung Electronics B2B Integrated Offering Centre executive vice president Chanwoo Park said: “By integrating SmartThings Pro into Kia PBV, we plan to present an intelligent new way for businesses to be connected to their customers.

“We will provide an optimised integrated store management experience based on customised solutions to cater for a range of B2B customers including the self-employed and small business owners.”
