Alfredo Altavilla, Iveco boss and chairman of the commercial vehicle board of ACEA, the association of European vehicle manufacturers, said the EU depends on leading industries to enable it to compete globally and secure environmental objectives and thereby provide “a healthy economic environment for its citizens”.

He said closer links should be established between strategies covering industrial growth, sustainable transport, international trade and research and development.

Automotive manufacturers are feeling the strain of stagnated economic growth in Europe but the pressure to cut emissions remains relentless.

“We need to decarbonise our economy and we need to reduce our dependency on oil,” said Altavilla.

“Unfortunately we do not have the power of magic to give us solutions but our industry will lead in delivering the mobility solutions of tomorrow.”

Commercial vehicle manufacturers have committed to a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency by 2020 compared to 2005.
