Sometimes you need a specialist to get a particularly challenging job done, and that’s why this quarter the What Van? IVECO Daily Mission Awards is putting the spotlight on specialist vehicles. These distinctive IVECO Daily vehicles utilise their versatile DNA to maximise potential. If there’s a mission that needs a specialised vehicle, the IVECO Daily is there. Entries for this category in 2024 have been amongst the most competitive ever! From innovative recovery vehicles to those serving their community, the judges had their work cut out to forge this shortlist.

Torton Bodies – Walton Summit

The importance of free access to books is undeniable, even in areas without access to a library. The IVECO Daily is no stranger to the mobile library van mission thanks to its strong truck-based chassis, however, bodybuilder Torton Bodies becomes one of the first to make this mission zero-emissions.

This IVECO eDaily 7.2t chassis cab, equipped with three batteries to maximise range, allows the mobile library to reach as many people as possible. The highly durable chassis is paired with a lightweight bonded panel body to maximise payload. Paired with IVECO Air Pro pneumatic suspension for optimal body control, and with a class-leading turning circle perfect for urban spaces, this eDaily’s 4,750mm wheelbase is easy to manoeuvre from behind the wheel.

The aim of this IVECO is to bring books to everyone, and so the inclusion of a wheelchair access lift powered by an auxiliary system that helps deliver this important mission component impressed judges. Something else that scored well was the fit and finish of the library area that’s just as welcoming as any modern reading space. It even features Torton T-shaped cutouts in the shelves, not just to boost the visuals, but also to save weight.

Supplied by Walton Summit, this IVECO eDaily serves as a shining example of how operators needn’t sacrifice capability to achieve an all-electric mission.

The AA – Northern Commercials

When an unexpected breakdown strikes, the warm glow of the AA’s beacons and distinctive yellow livery gives you reassurance that you’ll soon be back on the road. This iconic British recovery firm is always looking to innovate, and so the IVECO eDaily, supplied by Northern Commercials, was a natural choice to join its electric division of recovery vehicles.

This impressive 4.25t eDaily CRT van is capable of recovering vehicles and comfortably accommodating customers while they wait. An electrically deployable step welcomes guests, making access to the rear easy. The crew van benefits from
‘AA’ embroidered leather seats and features a custom table complete with drinks holders and USB chargers. Roadside noise is also kept at bay thanks to additional sound insulation.

At the rear, a Victory Conversions roller shutter stores the heavy-duty TowPro CRT
unit when not in use. Once deployed, this EV has a towing capacity of 3,250kg when paired with the AA’s Freewheeling Hubs. There’s also lockable storage for the host of tools required for this mission, while fire fighting and first aid equipment are all stowed to cover every eventuality.

Judges were impressed by the AA’s commitment to zero-emission recovery, employing features such as tyre pressure monitoring, eco tyres and telematics to maximise efficiency.

Remac – South West Truck & Van

The IVECO Daily is already a proven veteran of the groundwork mission and now Remac’s fleet of Daily vehicles has been joined by a special 3.5t van that carries a powerful message. An all-female crew will run this IVECO that carries the mantra of “she believed she could, so she did” in a show of admiration of women in the construction industry.

Supplied by South West Truck & Van and equipped to help high-profile customer Bristol Water, this vehicle features twin-rear wheels to maximise traction and a tow bar to take advantage of the Daily’s impressive 3.5t towing capacity. Kuda Automotive then installed custom racking with split 50/50 working space and bulkhead divider, internal and external lighting, hand wash facilities, roof vents, first aid kit and ADR plates. Additional safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, warning signs, protective hats, gloves and glasses are all neatly stowed.

The 3.0-litre F1C diesel engine provides plenty of torque while balancing positive real-world efficiency. It’s paired with a hardy 6-speed manual gearbox featuring clutch durability boosted by 18% versus its predecessor. Oil changes are also at an impressive 350,000km.

Mission Award judges loved the messaging behind the vehicle’s design, the high quality of this conversion, and the attention to detail in building this vehicle to achieve its mission.
