The latest van safety ratings have been published by testing organisation Euro NCAP, showing a significant improvement from the industry.
The latest round of ratings, which are based on vans’ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), show 40% of vans achieved the top platinum rating.
These included the top-rated Ford Transit Courier, which achieved a 93% score, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz Vito, which received a 90% score.
Other platinum vans were the Renault Master (scoring 84%), Nissan Interstar (84%), Volkswagen Caddy Cargo (83%), Ford Transit Connect (83%), and Maxus eDeliver 5 (82%).
Vans achieving a gold rating were the Fiat Ducato (78%), Peugeot Boxer (78%), Vauxhall Movano (78%), Citroen Relay (78%), Nissan Townstar (78%), Iveco Daily (77%), Maxus eDeliver 7 (77%), Maxus eDeliver 9 (74%), Renault Trafic (69%), and the Nissan Primastar (69%).
The LEVC VN5 was rated silver, with a 50% rating.
Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said: “We have seen a significant improvement in the availability of ADAS as manufacturers comply with new legislation. Our commercial van ratings though are designed to drive the effectiveness and performance beyond what is required by GSR2.
“It is pleasing that vehicle manufacturers are responding to Euro NCAP’s tougher requirements and surpassing GSR2 standards, and we would urge fleet managers to consider commercial vans that have the Euro NCAP Platinum rating.
“These are the vehicles which most significantly outperform GSR2 regulations and offer commercial fleets safer choices that prevent or mitigate the severity of crashes and protect company reputation and their drivers.”
