There are four new diesel engines which are up to 13 per cent more fuel-efficient, claims VW. These include two 1.6-litre TDI engines with 75hp and 102hp, plus two 2.0-litre TDI units with 110hp and 140hp. The Caddy also gets VW’s latest seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox and 4Motion four-wheel drive, currently available on the Transporter.

BlueMotion Technology models will be available in the 1.6-litre van and passenger-carrying variants. These use start/stop and battery regeneration systems to help achieve a CO2 output of 129g/km and fuel economy of 57mpg, giving a potential range of up to 735 miles on one tank of diesel.

The new Caddys will also have ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) as standard on every model. Other new safety features include daytime running lights and automatic activation of the hazard lights under emergency braking.

The seven-seat Caddy Maxi Life will be renamed the Caddy Maxi MPV. Full details of prices and specifications will be released closer to launch.
