Volkswagen has introduced a new entry-level engine option for its Amarok pick-up.
The new 161hp version of VW’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, which joins the existing 201hp and 221hp versions in the range, is available only in base Trendline trim.
This model is priced at £24,510 excluding VAT, which means it becomes the cheapest Amarok on sale.
VW says the new engine option, which like the others in the range meets the Euro 6 emissions standard, has been introduced in response to customer demand.
The engine has 24 valves, overhead camshafts, and comes with fuel-saving BlueMotion technology.
Coming with a six-speed manual gearbox and selectable 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, it delivers CO2 emissions of 228g/km, and official fuel economy of 32.5mpg on a combined cycle.
Producing up to 450nm of torque, it can power the Amarok from 0 to 62mph in 9.8 seconds, and on to a top speed of 110mph.
The vehicle has a gross vehicle weight of 3,200kg, a maximum payload rating of 1,073kg, and a maximum braked towing weight of 3,000kg.
Standard features include 17in alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, App-Connect and a 6.3in touchscreen.
Order books are open now, with the first deliveries expected in May.
The new model is also included in VW’s scrappage scheme, which gives customers a £2,000 discount on a new Amarok if they trade in an older vehicle that complies with pre-Euro 5 emissions standards.
To qualify for this, the new vehicle must be ordered by 31 March, and registered by 30 June.
