Mobile mapping company Here has added geofencing to its commercial arm, Here Platform for Business, to help companies track goods.
Geofencing allows users to define geographic boundaries or perimeters, which can be used to alert them when the tracked object or person enters or leaves a specified area.
Here said there are a number of uses for geofencing, including.
Logistics companies: Set up alerts when their delivery vehicles are within 15 minutes of the warehouse so that personnel can be ready and waiting to unload the goods.
Taxi services: Can use geofencing to be alerted when there are less than five available cars within a high-demand pickup zone, like an airport or a stadium on game day, helping them redirect cars to where potential passengers are located.
The new extension also works in combination with other services available in the Here Platform for Business.
For example, using its isoline routing service users can define the area that can be reached from a specific spot, such as the company’s distribution centre, within a particular time or distance.
They can then use the resulting area in combination with the geofencing extension to set up trigger alerts.
“Geofencing is an important and versatile addition to our Here Platform for Business” says Nick Kelter, director of Platform for Business at Here. “What sets our solution apart from others is that it’s very scalable and fast, capable of tracking thousands of assets within a single application, making it up to the challenge of enterprise level use cases.”
