Electric van manufacturer Canoo has filed for bankruptcy in the United States, and announced that it would immediately cease operations.

The US-based company said this followed unsuccessful efforts to raise funds from foreign investors, and from the US Department of Energy.

The move comes only three months after Canoo announced it had secured regulatory approval for pilot testing of right-hand drive versions of its LDV 130 and LDV 190 vans with a UK fleet.

It said it had previously successfully delivered vehicles to organisations such as NASA, the US Department of Defense, the US Postal Service, and the State of Oklahoma.

Canoo chairman and CEO Tony Aquila said: “We would like to thank the company’s employees for their dedication and hard work.

“We know that you believed in our company as we did. We are truly disappointed that things turned out as they did.”
